Obituary of Mary (Martin) Rhine Winfield (Kansas) Courier, 6 January 1930 Mrs. Mary Martin Rhine, who was born in northwestern Missouri August 24, 1850, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Myrtle Mercer, in Burden, Thursday, January 2. Funeral services were held at the Burden Methodist church Sunday afternoon and were conducted by Rev. R. L. Mawdsley. Interment was made in the Burden cemetery. Mrs. Rhine was converted and joined the Methodist Episcopal church at the age of 11. She held her membership at the time of her death in the Redd Valley Methodist church where she taught a Sunday school class as long as she was able. She was consistent in her church attendance and active in its work. Her father was a pioneer Methodist minister and two brothers, J. W. and Elza Martin, both deceased, were ministers of the Methodist church. At the age of 17, Mrs. Rhine moved with her parents to Nebraska where she was married on August 18, 1870, to Isaac G. Rhine. In 1883 they moved to Oklahoma and in 1884 to Kansas, settling near Oxford. Mr. Rhine died February 2, 1898. Surviving are four children, Mrs. Myrtle Mercer of Burden, Mrs. May Tannehill of Chicago, Mrs. Mabel Eastman of McAllen, Texas, and Richard Rhine of south of Winfield, two sisters, Mrs. Sara Wilson of Paonia, Colo., and Mrs. Lucinda Crook of Denver, 13 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Two daughters, Alice and Nellie, preceded her in death. Mrs. Rhine suffered a stroke New Year's day. Her daughter, Mrs. Tannehill of Chicago, had suffered a stroke Christmas day and was unable to come for the funeral. Charles and John Martin and Roy Dunn of Fall City, nephews of Mrs. Rhine, were among those from out-of-town who attended the funeral Sunday. For his text at the funeral service, Mr. Mawdsley used "Blessed is the death of the saints in the sight of the Lord."
