Mary Louise (Humphrey) Anderson, the second child of Ambrose and Jane (Martin) Humphrey, was born about 1855 in Sidney Township of Fremont County, Iowa. Both the Iowa State Census of 1856 and the 1860 Federal Census show her living in that township along with her parents, her Martin grandparents, and various aunts and uncles. About 1869, her family moved down to Falls City Township of Richardson County, Nebraska, and they are shown there in the 1870 census.
Mary married David L. Anderson in Richardson County on 24 April 1878. He had been born in Iowa on 5 January 1842, the son of Amos Jefferson Anderson and Mary Polly (Blazer) Anderson. He had fought for the Union during the Civil War, serving from 1861 to 1864 in Companies K and B of the First Missouri Engineer Regiment. During David's service, his unit had seen action at New Madrid, Missouri; Shiloh, Tennessee; Corinth, Mississippi; and Jonesboro, Georgia. After their marriage, Mary and David moved to Ashland, Saunders County, Nebraska, and a year later Mary was dead. Although I have not found any death record or obituary for her, the date on her tombstone appears to be “Apr. 22, 1879.” Also, the cause of her death is not hard to surmise if one notes the gravesite next to hers designated for “Infant Anderson, 1879–1879.” David apparently remained in Ashland the rest of his life. He married Minnie Bryan there on 10 September 1882 and had a son (George H. Anderson) with her in 1888. David later died in Ashland on 26 September 1894 and was buried in Ashland Cemetery close to Mary and their deceased infant.
