James Plowman Martin, the 14th child of John Martin, Jr., and the second born to John’s second wife, Lavina (Plowman) Martin, was born 30 Apr 1866 at Camargo, Douglas County, Illinois.  On 8 August 1897, he married Minnie May Mitchell in Douglas County.  She had been born 22 October 1874 in Camargo, the daughter of Joseph and Sarah E. (Taylor) Mitchell.

James moved about more than most of his Martin siblings.  He and Minnie were still in Douglas County at the time of the 1900 census, and all four of their children were born there.  By 1910, however, they had moved off to Gove Township, in Worth County, Iowa.  Ten years later, the 1920 census found them in Bellefonte, Nottoway County, Virginia.  For the 1930 census, they were once again back in Worth County, Iowa, in Barton.  One year later, though, 15 July 1931, James died in Richmond, Virginia, and he is buried there in the Maury Cemetery.

Following James’s death, Minnie moved in with their son Kenneth in Brookland, Henrico County, VA, which is a suburb of Richmond.  (The 1940 census showed not only that she was living there then, but that that had also been her address in 1935.)  Minnie died in Richmond on 16 November 1966 and is buried there beside James.

James and Minnie were the parents of four children:

  • Kenneth Elbert Martin, 1898–1986 (married Mary Keenan Sharpe).
  • Cleitus Edgar Martin, 1899–1959 (married Helen Baugh).
  • Clifford Lloyd Martin, 1902–1967 (married Sarah Beatrice Burton).
  • Gladys Lovina Martin, 1904–2007 (married Luther Alfred Schmidt).
