Click here for the John Martin Family home page. 3rd Generation - Isaac Martin

Isaac Martin, the seventh child of John Martin, Jr., and Mary Ann (Wheeler) Martin, was born 24 December 1850 at Camargo, Illinois (which was then part of Coles County but was included in Douglas County in 1859).

We have no record showing that Isaac ever married or ever owned any property of his own.  The 1870 census shows 19-year-old Isaac living in the household of his uncle Ambrose Martin, and his occupation is identified as “farm laborer.”  In 1880, he is shown as a “domestic” living in the home of his sister Nancy and her husband James Barnett.  Isaac seems to have been overlooked by the 1900 census.  In 1910, he is shown as a roomer in the household of Gentry Osborn in Camargo, with the occupation of “laborer.”

Isaac died on 5 December 1916 at the home of his nephew Frank Van Vorhis in Sargeant Township, Douglas County, Illinois.  He is buried at the Van Vorhis Cemetery.

An entertaining, albeit jaundiced view of Isaac’s character was provided by a remembrance published in a Tuscola newspaper a few days after his death.  There’s not much that I can add to that.
