Phebe
Jane Martin, the
fifth child of Ambrose and Phebe
(Stewart) Martin, was born 17 September 1844 near Camargo,
Illinois, which was then in Coles County but became part of
Douglas County in 1879. Phebe Jane never married and lived
in her parents' household for the rest of her life. She
was commonly called "Jane" in the family, to differentiate her
from her mother Phebe. After her mother died in 1875 and
her sister Mahala passed away in 1877, Jane was the primary
caretaker for her father Ambrose. He was still living,
however, when Jane herself passed away on 28 October 1897.
Ambrose lived with his son Ambrose Jr. for the last 3 years of
