Mahala
Martin, the
first-born child of Ambrose and Phebe
(Stewart) Martin, was born 31 May 1832 in Athens County,
Ohio. At about the age of 5, she moved with her family to
the area of Camargo, Illinois, which was then Coles County but
is now in Douglas County. Mahala never married and lived
in her parents' household for the rest of her life. Her
mother, Phebe, died in 1875. Mahala herself passed away 13
