Ambrose Rutherford Martin, Jr., the fourth child of Ambrose and Phebe (Stewart) Martin, was born 12 September 1842 near Camargo, Illinois, which was then included in Coles County, but became part of Douglas County in 1859.  Ambrose spent his entire life in this area.

On 22 April 1870, Ambrose married Rebecca Gurnea in Douglas County.  She was born 04 Sep 1848 in Champaign County, Ohio, the daughter of Hiram and Lydia (Diehm) Gurnea.  After marriage, Ambrose and Rebecca lived about a mile south of Camargo on property adjacent his parents’ farm and also close by his sister Louisa Harshbarger and his uncle John Martin, Jr.  This arrangement is reflected by the proximity of listings in the 1870 and 1880 censuses, and is also shown graphically in the 1893 Plat Book of Douglas County, Illinois, image 9.

Ambrose Martin, Jr., died 24 January 1901, and his wife Rebecca died 18 May 1915.  They are buried together at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Camargo.  Together, they were the parents of 11 children (2 of whom died in infancy):

  • Phebe May Martin, 1871–1942 (married John Nathan Hillard).
  • John Frank Martin, 1873–1873.
